The front carries a crowned Madonna in profile against a rayed halo, her head bowed toward a smaller face at her shoulder in a gesture of ordinary tenderness, a mother leaning in toward her child. Turn it over and the mood changes: a veiled figure with hands joined in prayer stands inside a raised triangular frame edged in fine beading, the reverse recessed and still where the front is soft and rounded.
Along the lower edge of the front the word ITALY is cast into the metal, the country mark carried over from the antique original. Italian workshops turned out rosary centers of this kind in great numbers for pilgrims and parish shops, and the crowned Madonna in profile was among their most enduring designs, worn smooth in a thousand hands.
