The Vintage Bronze Large 19th-Century European Crucifix is the biggest and most heavily worked cross in this group, standing over three inches. The shaft is twisted like rope, clusters of berries and leaves close each arm, and behind the corpus a burst of foliage and rays opens at the crossing. The figure is modelled in deep relief with the head fallen forward onto the chest.
A crucifix this size was made to be seen from across a room: hung at the belt of a habit, fixed above a bed, or carried as the pendant of an outsized rosary. The living foliage breaking out around a dying man is the whole point of the design, the wood of the cross flowering again, the tree of the Fall answered by the tree of redemption. Nineteenth-century European workshops loved that idea and gave it this generous, exuberant treatment.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
