The Vintage Bronze Holy Spirit Dove Medal is a round medal filled almost edge to edge by a dove descending, its wings spread wide and its head turned slightly to one side. The tail feathers fan out below, each one ruled in, the breast is worked in fine overlapping scales, and the ground behind the bird is left rough and matte so that the polished relief stands sharply against it.
The dove has stood for the Holy Spirit since the Jordan, where it came down on Christ at his baptism, and shown descending with the wings out it is the image of the Spirit arriving: at a baptism, at a confirmation, at Pentecost with the wind and the fire. Small medals of this kind were often given at Confirmation, which is the right occasion for an image carrying no lettering at all. The gift is the thing, and it does not need explaining.
