The Vintage Bronze Holy Spirit and Crown of Thorns Center works on a single strong contrast. The dove of the Holy Spirit descends with its wings spread to the full width of the piece and its tail fanned below, the feathering picked out across breast and pinions in fine relief. Around it twists a ring of thorned and leafed branches, with a small spray closing the wreath at the foot.
Setting the Spirit inside the crown of thorns puts the gift and the cost of it into one image, which is why the pairing turns up so often in older devotional metalwork: the Spirit is sent from the Cross, and the crown that mocked a king becomes the frame for what he gives. Unusually wide across the wings, it reads clearly at the head of a strand and makes a natural gift at Confirmation.
