At the center of the Vintage Bronze Holy Face of Jesus Rosary Center is a small round medallion carrying the head of Christ crowned with thorns, the face turned a little aside and slightly bowed. Around it the metal opens into long calla lilies on whiplash stems that sweep out to left and right, so that the medallion sits like a jewel in a spray of flowers.
The Holy Face belongs to the Passion devotions, the face as it appeared beneath the crown of thorns, honored in reparation by those who pray for the insults offered to it. The sinuous stems and open lilies of the frame are Art Nouveau in feeling, the manner of the French workshops around the turn of the last century, and the pairing of that ornament with so severe a subject is what makes the piece unusual.
