The Vintage Bronze French Marriage Medal is worked in the grand French manner. A man in a cloak and a veiled woman stand together at a low altar, her hand resting on his arm, their heads inclined toward one another, the drapery cut in long classical folds against a finely grained ground. The reverse is a plain field ringed by a deep wreath of roses, with a small interlaced monogram at its centre and room left for engraving.
Two words are set in the field on either side of the couple: FIDELITE and BONHEUR, fidelity and happiness. Between them they say what the medal is for, and in what order the nineteenth-century engravers believed the two arrived. Medals like this were given at a wedding or a significant anniversary and kept for a lifetime, then handed down to the next couple in the family.
