The Madonna stands on it with a wide brim of halo above her face, her robe falling straight to her feet and her right hand raised open in blessing, the Child seated on her left arm and holding a small vessel before him.
Nothing is smoothed or prettified. The carving is flat, frank and deliberately naive, in the manner of the Central European folk workshops rather than the Paris and Lyon medal trade, and the original was a German piece of about 1900 made for Christmas. That directness is the charm of it: a mother and her child under the stars, cut by someone who cared more about saying it than about polishing it. It wears large and reads clearly across a room.
