The arms and shaft are cut in fine parallel flutes, like bundled reeds, flaring outward at the ends, and slender tendrils curl away from the crossing and along the arms so the cross seems to be putting out growth. Against that, the corpus is long and attenuated, modelled with a restraint that keeps the piece calm.
The cross that flowers is among the oldest images in Christian art — the dead wood of Calvary breaking into leaf, the instrument of death becoming the tree of life — and this pattern makes the argument in the metal itself rather than in any inscription. A small titulus sits above the crossbar, and at 1 3/4 inches the whole piece wears comfortably every day.
