The Flared Openwork Crucifix has an unusual profile: the arms widen into fluted fans, and the metal between them is pierced away so that light passes through the cross behind the figure. The corpus is quietly modelled, the head fallen to one side, and a small scroll rests above it in the place a titulus would take.
That scroll is the piece's most interesting detail, because it is cast without lettering. On most crucifixes it carries INRI, the charge Pilate set over the cross, and here it is left open, as though the wearer were being asked to name the man for himself. The fanned arms and pierced fields belong to a long line of European folk crosses, made light on purpose so that a large cross could be worn or prayed with all day without weight, and the effect is delicate rather than heavy.
