The Vintage Bronze First Communion Medal shows the tenderest moment in the Gospels. Christ, haloed and bearded, holds a young beardless disciple who has leaned back against his breast; a chalice stands on the table before them and a column rises behind. This is John the Evangelist at the Last Supper, the disciple whom Jesus loved, resting on his Lord in the hour the Eucharist was given.
The reverse says what the medal was for. Inside a lobed cartouche wreathed in flowering stems, four lines read RECUERDO DE MI PRIMERA COMUNION, souvenir of my First Communion. The pairing of the two scenes is the whole idea: the child who receives for the first time is put in John's place at the table, near enough to hear the heart of Christ. It makes a keepsake with rather more weight to it than most.
