The Vintage Bronze Fine Foliate Crucifix is carried entirely by its modelling. Christ is set on a cross whose four arms open into scrolled, leaf-like ends, with a small leafy finial rising above the head and a spade-shaped point closing the lower shaft. The whole piece is worked in deep relief, so shadow does most of the drawing.
The head is inclined toward the right shoulder in the traditional attitude of the moment of death, the detail that turns a cross into a crucifix and an ornament into a prayer. The foliage around it is not decoration only. This crucifix belongs to a long family of European devotional crosses in which leafwork stands for the tree of life, the cross understood as the dead branch that flowered, and the instrument of death read as the source of life.
