The Faith, Hope and Charity Puffy Heart Center is generously domed, with a smaller heart raised at its middle and two curved forms rising to either side, an anchor and a cross, all gathered beneath a scalloped crest that runs across the top of the field.
Those three emblems are the old shorthand for the theological virtues, drawn from Saint Paul's letter to the Corinthians: the cross for faith, the anchor for hope, the heart for charity. And now these three remain, he writes, and the greatest of these is charity. The relief is soft and the field full, in the manner of the puffed heart centers made for hand-strung rosaries, so the piece gives the thumb something to find as the beads come round, decade after decade.
