The Vintage Bronze Etched Madonna Milagro is cut as a flat silhouette: a standing veiled Madonna whose mantle spreads to a wide bell-shaped hem, with everything else drawn into the surface rather than modelled out of it. Rows of scallops, chevrons and dotted lines score the robe, a small cross marks the collar, and even the face is engraved, two eyes and a mouth incised into the flat metal.
Milagros were carried to shrines as petitions and as thanksgivings, pinned to a statue's robe or an altar cloth for a healing asked or received, and left there in their hundreds where the whole parish could see them. The nineteenth-century original behind this casting was worked by hand for exactly that purpose, and the directness of its engraving is centuries old. Worn today the milagro hangs flat and light, and reads as strongly from across a room as it does in the hand.
