The Etched Folk Cross with Haloed Figure has its whole design cut into the surface with a graver rather than raised in relief. A standing haloed figure fills the field, the face drawn in a few strokes, the arms stretched out along the crossbar and the body marked with close parallel hatching. A staff carrying a small banner is incised beside him, and rough hatched lines fill the ground below his feet.
A banner on a staff is the oldest sign in Christian art for victory over death, carried through every scene of the Resurrection, and set here beside a figure with arms open on the cross it makes the whole small plate a statement of triumph rather than defeat. The drawing is plain and direct, the work of a folk hand rather than a trained die-cutter, and that plainness is a great deal of its appeal.
