The Vintage Bronze Draped Crucifixion Medal is an arched plaque rather than a cross, and a striking piece of design. Christ is shown crucified against a pair of heavy curtains drawn back on either side, the cross bar carried on two pillars like the frame of a shrine, the body long and archaic in its proportions, the drapery cut in deep parallel folds that fill the whole ground behind him.
Parted curtains are an old device in Christian art, and they say something particular here. At the moment of the death on the cross the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and what had been hidden stood open. Framing the Crucifixion as a shrine drawn back for viewing makes this medal a small permanent unveiling, carried on the person, and the archaic modelling of the body gives it the gravity of much older work.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
