The Vintage Bronze Double-Sided Crucifix with Ferns and IHS is finished on both faces. The front carries the corpus against a rayed disc at the crossing, the arms flaring into foliate tips and the shaft widening to a leafy foot. Turn it over and the whole surface is given to growing things: fern fronds, leaves and small flowers running the length of the shaft and out along the arms, with the monogram IHS in a rayed medallion at the centre.
IHS is the ancient abbreviation of the name of Jesus, taken from its first letters in Greek and carried through centuries of Christian art, on vestments, on altars and above church doors. Setting it where the corpus sits on the other side makes the two faces say the same thing twice, once in a body and once in a name. The greenery is the old sense of the cross as a living tree, and the deep undercutting of the leafwork holds the antiqued finish in its recesses, so the ornament stays legible at two inches.
The double-sided crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
