This medal is cut to the outline of a dressed statue. The crowned Virgin stands in a wide bell-shaped mantle worked all over with rows of dots and long vertical folds, the crowned Child on her right arm and a small cross-staff in her left hand. Her mantle rests on an upturned crescent, a winged cherub head fills the point below, and a pierced crown of scrollwork tops the whole figure.
The form belongs to the Spanish colonial workshops of Latin America, where the great processional images of the Virgin are vested in stiff triangular robes, crowned in silver and carried through the streets on their feast days. The crescent beneath her is the moon of the woman clothed with the sun in the Apocalypse, long read as an image of Mary, and the cherub below is the heavenly court in miniature. To wear the statue's own silhouette is to keep the procession close all year.
