The Vintage Bronze Cross of St. James Crucifix is cast in the distinctive form of the cross of Santiago. Its lower limb is not an arm at all but a sword blade tapering to a sharp point, while the upper and side arms open into lobed lily terminals. Behind Christ's head a shell-like burst of rays spreads across the crossing, and a small plaque rests at his feet.
Sword and lily together are the badge of the Order of Santiago, the medieval Spanish order founded under the patronage of Saint James the Greater, the sword for the knight and the lily for the apostle. His shrine at Compostela has drawn pilgrims across Europe for a thousand years and draws them still. Laying a corpus over that emblem, as this piece does, sets the crucified Christ within the sign of the apostle who followed him the whole way, which is the logic of the pilgrim road itself.
