Product Details

The double-barred Cross of Lorraine, treated here as filigree. Both crossbars and the shaft are cut through into a lattice of scrollwork studded with small rosettes, and every arm finishes in a scrolled fleur-de-lis, so the cross reads as lace. At an inch and a half it hangs light for its size, and the open ground lets whatever is behind it show through.

The two-barred cross is the old patriarchal form, historically used for crosses that enshrined a relic of the True Cross, and it became the badge of the dukes of Lorraine and later a rallying sign for France itself. Worked this finely it belongs to the French tradition of pierced devotional metalwork that ran through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when a cross was expected to be a prayer and a piece of fine jewelry at once. The antiquing settles into the lattice and leaves the scrolls bright.

This openwork Cross of Lorraine was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the cross's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
