Product Details

This crucifix takes the two-barred form known as the Cross of Lorraine: a short upper bar above a longer lower one, each arm ending in a fleur-de-lis, with beaded hatching running along the edges. The corpus hangs from the lower bar, and a small cross is incised into the upper bar where the titulus would be lettered.

The double-barred cross came west from the patriarchal crosses of the Eastern churches and took root in France, where it became a national emblem as much as a devotional one — the sign of the dukes of Lorraine, of Joan of Arc's own country, and later of the Free French. Worn as a crucifix it keeps its older meaning first: the cross of Christ, with Mary's lily set at every terminal. At two and a half inches it has real presence and reads clearly from across a room.

The Cross of Lorraine crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
