The Vintage Bronze Caravaca Cross takes its double-barred form and its name from Caravaca de la Cruz in Murcia, where a relic of the true cross has been venerated for centuries. The crucified Christ hangs at the centre, CARAVACA is cut plainly into the lower bar, and two winged angels stand at the foot of the shaft with their hands raised to support it, as they are shown holding the relic in the town's own processions.
The double bar marks this out as a reliquary cross, the shape used across Europe for crosses that held a fragment of the true wood, and the Caravaca form in particular has been worn as a protection against illness and danger for generations in Spain and throughout Latin America. The other face carries a standing figure with hands joined in prayer at the crossing, so the cross reads well whichever way it turns. The relief is deep and the detail crisp at an inch and a half.
