Product Details

A close-standing group of robed figures beneath a burst of light fills the field of this medal, held inside an openwork wreath of full-blown roses, buds and leaves that the light passes straight through. The rim is lettered BB. J. DE BREBEUF ET, Latin for Blessed Jean de Brebeuf and, naming the first of the Jesuit martyrs of New France and his companions.

Brebeuf came to the Huron country in 1625, learned the language well enough to write a catechism and a Christmas carol in it, and was killed with Gabriel Lalemant in 1649. He and his companions were beatified in 1925 and canonized in 1930 as the martyrs of North America, and they are honored as patrons of Canada. Medals of the group were made in quantity in those years, and the rose wreath around this one is French in feeling, the flowers of martyrdom growing around the men who earned them.

The Canadian Martyrs medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
