The standing figure is haloed and marked by rays falling from the upper left; he lays his hand on a second friar who kneels before him with a book held open, and behind them the ground rises in bare rock. The reverse is flat and filled with ten lines of Spanish.
The text is the blessing itself: The Lord bless you and keep you; may he show you his face and have mercy on you; may he turn his face toward you and grant you peace. May the Lord bless this his servant. These are the words Saint Francis wrote out for Brother Leo on Mount La Verna, taken from the priestly blessing in the Book of Numbers, given to a friar who was struggling and needed something to hold. Leo kept that parchment for the rest of his life. The mountain in the background of the front is La Verna, which makes the two faces of this medal a single scene and its text.
