The Baroque Virgin medal is full baroque taste in a piece two inches tall. A crowned figure stands under a rayed halo in the stiff, bell-shaped mantle of a dressed devotional statue, the embroidery of her robe worked out in tiny cast lines, while the frame around her breaks into scrolls, flowers and small winged angel heads, all cut clear through so that the piece is as much tracery as plaque.
A date is cast into the scrollwork at the foot, beginning 1693, and it belongs to the antique original from which this piece is reproduced. It places the design in the years when Spanish and Italian workshops were dressing their Virgins in ever wider robes and setting them in ever more elaborate glories, and when a medal was expected to be a small altarpiece. What you receive is a modern casting of that old design, hand-finished so the highlights fall where they did on the original.
