The arms of the Vintage Bronze Baroque Acanthus Crucifix do not simply end, they unfurl. Each of the four terminals opens into broad curling acanthus leaves, and the shaft between them is left narrow so the eye travels straight to the corpus at the crossing. A rayed halo is cast behind the head, and a small plaque above the crossbar carries the titulus.
That titulus reads INRI, the Latin abbreviation of Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered fixed to the cross. Acanthus is the leaf of Roman and baroque ornament, and setting it on a crucifix makes the old claim that the Cross is a living tree. The form is generous and moving in the baroque way, and it hangs with real weight.
