The Vintage Bronze Art Deco Medal of Christ and the Virgin gives a figure to each face, cut down to almost nothing. On one side the Virgin stands veiled with her hands joined at the breast, her robe reduced to a few long straight planes falling unbroken to her feet. On the other, Christ stands haloed with his long hair and a hand drawn across his breast, handled in exactly the same stripped-down way. Only the halo, the hands and the fall of cloth are allowed to speak.
This is Art Deco devotional work at its most confident, from the years when French and Belgian medalists were paring sacred images back to line and plane. Neither face carries lettering, and none is wanted; the whole effect depends on silhouette, which is why a design of the 1920s still looks modern nearly a century on.
