On December 9, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an indigenous Mexican peasant, on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City. When the bishop requested a sign, Mary miraculously imprinted her image on Juan Diego’s tilma — a cloak that remains preserved nearly 500 years later.
