St. Virgil of Salzburg
Irish-Frankish bishop (c. 700-784), abbot of Iona-trained "Fergil," missionary at Salzburg under Pippin; Bishop of Salzburg from 767. Disputed with St. Boniface over the validity of baptism using a faulty Latin formula and over the existence of the antipodes (Virgil's view, Boniface's challenge). Apostle of Carinthia. Canonized 1233 by Gregory IX.
