Pope from c. 189-199, of African origin (the first African pope); insisted on the Sunday observance of Easter against the Quartodeciman practice of the Asian churches, briefly excommunicating Polycrates of Ephesus before being restrained by St. Irenaeus. Pre-Congregation.
