St. Ulrich of Augsburg
German bishop (890-973), Bishop of Augsburg from 923 for fifty years; with Emperor Otto I led the defense of Augsburg against the invading Magyars at the Battle of the Lechfeld (955). First saint canonized by formal papal canonization (993 by John XV)—the inaugural papal canonization in history.
