St. Turibius of Mogrovejo
Spanish-Peruvian archbishop (1538-1606), Salamanca canon-lawyer and lay inquisitor at Granada when Philip II nominated him to the see of Lima despite his lay status; ordained and consecrated 1580. Held three provincial councils at Lima that organized colonial Latin American Catholic life; defended the Indigenous against Spanish colonists. Confirmed Sts. Rose of Lima, Martin de Porres, John Macias, Francis Solanus. Canonized 1726 by Benedict XIII.
