St. Stephen the Protomartyr
First Christian martyr (1st century-c. 34), one of the seven first deacons (Acts 6:5); first to give a major Christian discourse before the Sanhedrin reviewing salvation history (Acts 7), then stoned to death outside Jerusalem with Saul (later Paul) consenting. Discovery of his relics in 415 was a major event in late-antique Christianity.
