St. Simon of Cyrene
North African Jew of Cyrene (modern Libya), passing on the way into Jerusalem when he was compelled by Roman soldiers to carry the cross of Jesus to Calvary (Mt 27:32; Mk 15:21; Lk 23:26); Mark identifies him as father of Alexander and Rufus, suggesting his family was known in the early Roman church. Pre-Congregation.
