St. Simeon Stylites the Elder
Syrian ascetic (c. 390-459), former shepherd-monk of Telanissos who from 423 lived on a series of progressively higher pillars in the Syrian desert north of Aleppo, the last 36 feet high—the first "stylite" or pillar-saint. From his pillar gave counsel to emperors, bishops, and crowds of Bedouin and Persian pilgrims. Pre-Congregation.
