St. Raymond of Peñafort
Catalan Dominican canon lawyer (c. 1175-1275), Barcelona priest who entered the Dominicans late in life; commissioned by Gregory IX to compile the "Decretals" (1234), the principal collection of canon law for nearly seven centuries. Third Master General of the Dominicans; co-founder with St. Peter Nolasco of the Mercedarians. Lived to nearly 100. Canonized 1601 by Clement VIII.
