St. Ralph Sherwin
English secular priest and martyr (1550-1581), Derbyshire-born, Oxford scholar at Exeter College, ordained at Rome in 1577 (the first English priest of the new Roman seminary). Returned to England with St. Edmund Campion in 1580; arrested, tortured in the Tower, and hanged, drawn, and quartered at Tyburn. One of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales canonized 1970 by Paul VI.
