St. Peter Chanel
French Marist priest (1803-1841), of Cuet; first missionary of the Society of Mary in the South Pacific, sent to Futuna in 1837. Killed by Maukamoeagaee, the king's son-in-law, at the moment when much of the island was preparing baptism. The first martyr of Oceania; canonized 1954 by Pius XII.
