St. Paula of Rome
Roman matron (347-404), of senatorial family, widowed at 32 with five children; under the spiritual direction of St. Jerome (whom she met in Pope Damasus's circle) sailed in 385 with her daughter St. Eustochium for Bethlehem, where she founded a double monastery near the Nativity. Major patroness of Jerome's biblical scholarship. Pre-Congregation.
