St. Maurice
Coptic-Roman officer and martyr (d. c. 287), traditional commander of the Theban Legion of Egyptian Christian troops martyred at Agaunum (modern Saint-Maurice, Switzerland) under Maximian for refusing to sacrifice or attack fellow Christians. Patron of the Holy Roman Empire and of soldiers. Pre-Congregation; the legion-massacre tradition is debated by modern historians but the cultus is ancient.
