St. Leo IX
Pope from 1049-1054, Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg of Alsace; first major reformer pope of the Gregorian movement, canon-lawyer and tireless traveler who held synods throughout Italy, France, and Germany combating simony and clerical incontinence. The break with Constantinople (1054) occurred in the months after his death. Canonized 1087 by Victor III.
