St. John of Capistrano
Italian Franciscan preacher (1386-1456), Abruzzese lawyer turned friar after captivity in war; co-founder of the Observant Franciscan reform with St. Bernardine of Siena. Preached the crusade against the Ottoman invasion of Hungary and led a peasant army to victory with John Hunyadi at the Siege of Belgrade (1456). Canonized 1690 by Alexander VIII.
