Bohemian-American Redemptorist bishop (1811-1860), emigrated alone to New York for ordination in 1836; bishop of Philadelphia from 1852, where he organized the first diocesan parochial school system in the United States and built nearly 100 churches. First American male saint; canonized 1977 by Paul VI.
