English cardinal and theologian (1801-1890), Anglican leader of the Oxford Movement (Tracts for the Times) who in 1845 was received into the Catholic Church; founded the English Oratory after Italian study with St. Philip Neri's order. Author of "An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine," "Apologia Pro Vita Sua," "The Idea of a University," and "Grammar of Assent." Created cardinal 1879. Canonized 2019 by Francis.
