St. Jerome
Dalmatian priest, monk, and biblical scholar (c. 347-420), educated at Rome under Donatus; settled at Bethlehem from 386 with St. Paula and produced the Vulgate Latin Bible from the original Hebrew and Greek—the principal text of the Western Church for 1,500 years. Author of biblical commentaries, polemical works, and 154 letters. Doctor of the Church.
