St. Jean de Brébeuf
French Jesuit missionary (1593-1649), spent twenty years among the Wendat (Huron) developing a deep knowledge of their language; captured at Saint-Louis with St. Gabriel Lalemant during the Iroquois invasion and tortured to death over many hours. Among the eight Canadian (North American) Martyrs canonized 1930 by Pius XI.
