St. Hugh of Cluny
French Benedictine abbot (1024-1109), of noble birth, sixth abbot of Cluny from 1049 for an unprecedented sixty years; advisor to nine popes, defender and architect of the Gregorian Reform, builder of the great third abbey-church of Cluny (the largest church in Christendom until the rebuilding of St. Peter's), godfather of the future Emperor Henry IV. Canonized 1120 by Callixtus II.
