Holy Roman Emperor (973-1024), last of the Saxon Ottonian dynasty; King of Germany 1002, of Italy 1004, crowned Emperor by Benedict VIII in 1014. Founded the diocese of Bamberg, supported the Cluniac and Lotharingian monastic reforms; his marriage to St. Cunigunde was childless and according to tradition continent. Canonized 1146 by Eugene III.
