St. Gabriel Lalemant
French Jesuit missionary (1610-1649), nephew of fellow Jesuits Charles and Jérôme Lalemant; arrived at the Huron mission in 1648 and the next year, after only seven months among the Huron, was captured at the village of Saint-Louis with St. Jean de Brébeuf during the Iroquois invasion and tortured to death. One of the Canadian (North American) Martyrs canonized 1930 by Pius XI.
