St. Francis Solanus
Spanish Franciscan missionary to South America (1549-1610); after twenty years in Andalusia sailed for Peru in 1589 and labored for two decades among the indigenous peoples of Tucumán, Paraguay, and the upper Río de la Plata, said to have preached miraculously in their languages. Canonized 1726 by Benedict XIII.
