St. Edward the Confessor
King of England 1042-1066, son of Ethelred the Unready raised in Norman exile; restored the West Saxon line, rebuilt Westminster Abbey, and was renowned for piety, almsgiving, and chastity within marriage. His childless death precipitated the Norman Conquest. Canonized 1161 by Alexander III.
